Printing quality

What is giclee ?
The word Giclée (“g-clay”), is derived from the French verb gicler meaning “to squirt or spray”. Giclée is used to describe a fine art digital printing process combining pigment based inks with high quality archival quality paper to achieve Giclée prints of superior archival quality, light fastness and stability.

Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan, and can last anywhere from 100 to 200 years without significant fading. The type of printer used to create giclees is usually a larger format model that specifically uses pigment-based inks and will hold around eight to 12 different colour ink cartridges.

The Giclée printing process involves squirting or spraying microscopic dots of pigment-based ink onto high quality art paper or canvas. The image is colour corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original work if required. The digital information is fine tuned to the type of paper or surface on which the image is to be printed, further ensuring fidelity to the original.

Here at Martyna Zoltaszek studio, we use Giclée to reproduce our large format works. We have our giclees printed with a lovely local company called Niche Prints Bristol.

What is inkjet ?

You’ve probably heard of inkjet, its a print format widely used in homes and offices around the world. Although quality can and does vary greatly, when used for artworks, very careful control is used for ink, paper and hardware. In the last few years the world has been lucky enough to be blessed with high end inkjet printers combined with high quality inks and paper to provide amazing prints with vibrant colours!

We print our inkjet prints in our Bristol studio.
